Metsovo

Σπήλαιο Περάματος, Ιωάννινα

All the historiographical information and archeological findings of the province of Metsovo reinforce the view that this is an area that has been inhabited continuously since antiquity until today. In addition, the various toponyms of Roman origin confirm the Roman presence in the area, from 167 to 250 AD. It is noteworthy that from the 10th century until the end of the 18th century, Metsovo was under a privileged status. Konstantinos Porphyrogennitos in the 10th century, Andronikos III in the 14th century, Sultan Murad II in 1430 and Sultan Mehmet IV in 1659, successively grant privileges to Metsovo and the neighboring villages, which provide them with financial facilities , civil liberties as well as administrative and ecclesiastical autonomy. Their goal is to ensure the cooperation of the inhabitants in the control of the mountain pass of Libra or Katara, through which Epirus communicates with Thessaly and Western Macedonia.
